ROH DVD REVIEW - UP FOR GRABS - 6.6.08

This event features a Tag Tournament to crown new ROH Tag Team Champions, due to The Briscoes vacating their belts because of an injury to Mark Briscoe.

Bracket A:

Chris Hero and Adam Pearce w/Sweet N Sour Inc defeated Jigsaw and Ruckus.  Ruckus went for a kick, Hero blocked it and hit him with a Roaring Elbow, which advances SNS Inc to the Sem-finals.  Sweet N Sour Inc made Bobby Dempsey spend the match under the ring.  At one point, the ref was distracted an Jigsaw rolled him up and have him pinned for over 5 seconds but when the ref realized it, Pearce kicked out at 2.  Once again, the announcers mention that we are seeing a different Chris Hero, not more showboating, he is in ROH to win Championships.  It was an OK opener, I wish The Vulture Squad would’ve won because I like them better as a team.  There was not as much action as you’d except, it was more of a Peace/Hero style match.  After the match Eddie Kingston comes down to check on Ruckus, Jigsaw pushed him off of him, and Kingston goes after Jigsaw.  They were face to face talking mad shit finally, Jigsaw laps Kingston.  They brawled until Ruckus came to and broke them up.  Kingston tells Jigsaw, tomorrow night in Philly you are dead and leaves the ring.

They cut to the back and Sweeney is cutting a promo saying that ROH is going to be at their mercy when they become Tag Team Champions.  Chris Hero puts over Pearce as a great partner.

Kevin Steen and EL Generico defeated Nigel McGuinness and Go Shiozaki.  While the time limit had almost expired,  Steen quickly got Nigel in the Sharpshooter and Nigel tapped, while Generico dove to the outside to take out Go.  Holy shit, at the beginning of the match Nigel went to shake Steen’s hand and Steen covered his mouth and coughed, then extended his hand to Nigel, Nigel then stuck his hands down his trunks. grabbed his nuts, wiggled them for a couple seconds, then pulled his hand out, extended it to Steen, then Generico came out of nowhere and opened his trucks inviting Steen to touch his smelly balls.  Nigel then walks to his corner and the match starts with Go in there with Generico.  Go has some sick chops.  This was a damn good match.  If a match like this can be the second match of the card, ROH is doing something right.  Steen and Generico advance to the semi-finals.  Throughout the match they worked over Generico’s shoulder.  After the match Nigel took a chair and used it on Steen’s leg.  He put his leg inside the chair and stomped it from the 2nd rope.  Nigel went for more but Go stopped him.  Nigel leaves the ring and Steen is selling his leg injury while Generico is selling is shoulder.

They cut to the back and they are Generico and Steen are being attended to, Steen is getting his kneed wrapped.  Steen tells Generico that tonight is their night, they have been waiting too long for this.

Bracket B:

Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black defeated Delirious and Pelle Primeau.   Black hit the Small Package Driver on Pelle for the win.  They advance to the semi-finals.  I don’t have anything to say about the match, really.  There wasn’t anything wrong with it but it wasn’t exactly axhilirating either.  Delirious pulled a tie out of his tights and “put it on”.  He said, “Daizee Haze jsfjdgkmd, akdsj”.  She comes out.  Delirious was really fucking nervous, shaking.  As soon as Delirious starts to talk, Rhett Titus comes out.  Rhett talked about how much Daizee needs him then she schools the shit out of him and walks away and Delirious is all sad that she left.  “You got cockblocked” says the crowd.

Black and Jacobs promo out back.   Most people think Jacobs is awesome on the mic but fuck, Black is just as good if not better.

Austin Aries and Bryan Danielson defeated Roderick Strong and Davey Richards.  Danielson made Strong tap to a Triangle Choke.  This one was also went to the last minute of the 20 minute time limit.  It was mostly a mat match with some brawling.  It was good.  I am expecting the semi-final match against AOTF to be better.

Danielson and Aries are backstage and Danielson says they have to win because the Tag Titles are the only titles he has yet to hold in ROH.  Aries says they are going through Jacobs and Black and will go to the finals and win the belts.

SEMI-FINALS:

Kevin Steen and EL Generico defeated Adam Pearce and Chris Hero.   Hero immediately went for Steen’s injured knee as soon as the bell rang.  Not a very long match.  Hagadorn got on the apron and held up the briefcase that Pearce carries around and Hero went to slam Generico’s head into it but he reversed it and slammed Hero’s face into it, Generico rolled him up for the 3 count.  Everyone is blaming Bobby Dempsey even though he had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Steen and Generico are in the back laying on the floor in pain.  But Steen is still opptimistic and is saying he is telling Generico that they need to win the belts to make all the pain and suffering all this years, worth it.

SEMI-FINALS:

Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black defeated Bryan Danielson and Austin Aries.   Aries attacked Jimmy Jacobs before the match even started.  Jacobs used a chair on Aries early in the match while the ref was distracted, but Aries got it away from him and used it against him, the ref saw it and DQ’d Danielson and Aries.  Jacobs and Black left the ring quickly and Aries ran to the back with the chair.  Crowd is chanting “You got screwed” at Danielson.  The next night in Philly they have a re-match.

Black and Jacobs out back, saying that Aries snapped and ruin his chances at the belt for 1 chairshot.  Black says Steen and Generico are hurt and the belts are ripe for the picking.  Jacobs calls Steen and Generico cute and that they are going to shatter their dreams.

Shane Hagadorn defeated Alex “Sugarfoot” Payne.  Sara Del Ray came out, attacked Payne while he was outside the ring on the floor, rolled him back in the ring and Hagadorn hit STO, and covered him for the pin.  Sweeney comes out and says that during the Hero/Pearce tag match it was a quick count and the footage is going to be reviewed and the decision WILL be overturned.  Sweeney introduces Eddie Edwards and says he will destroy Claudio Clastagnoli in the next match.

Claudio Castagnoli defeated Eddie Edwards.  Claudio tosses Eddie into the air and hit him with an European Uppercut as he was falling down.  It was a fine little match but it just seems obvious that these last two matches meant nothing and were just filler in between the tag matches.

Erick Stevens defeated Necro Butcher and Brent Albright.  While brawling in the crowd, Necro actually tried to pin Stevens.  There was no ref in sight, this match isn’t even a Falls Count Anywhere Match!  The majority of the match was spent outside the ring, on the floor.  Necro, AGAIN, goes for a pinfall on the floor.  Ref kept telling him to get inside the ring, which eventually happened.  Stevens hit the Doctor Bomb on Necro to get the victory.

After the match SNS Inc comes out and attacks Albright, but he took them all out and went after Sweeney.  Pearce comes out with his briefcase and hits Albright with it before he can do anything to Sweeney.  Hagadorn and Edwards hold Albright across the ropes while Pearce whips him with a leather belt.  Albright powers out of it and SNS Inc make a run for it.  ALOT of post match activity on this show.  Just about every fucking match.  Weird.

Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black defeated Kevin Steen and EL Generico to become ROH World Tag Team Champions.  At one point, Steen gave Black a Powerbomb on the outside onto the edge of the ring apron.  That looked SICK.  Generico still was selling the shoulder and AOTF were focusing on it.  Black threw Generico off the apron shoulder straight into the steel guardrail and a group of wrestlers and refs came out to attend to Generico and from behind AOTF got Steen and pummeled him.  They took Generico to the back.  Steen took alot of damage to his injured leg, also.  Took multiple kicks and a figure four.   Steen kicked out of Black’s Small Package Driver.  Generico returned to the match from the back.  Crowd went nuts, everyone is on their feet.  They think Steen/Generuci are going to win.  Steen hits the Package Piledriver on Jacobs, rolls into Generico, he goes for the Brainbuste, Black comes from behind, rolls him up..1, 2, 3.  New champions.  Crowd HATES it.  Crowd starts to throw shit in the ring.  Not literally shit, but garbage.  Drinks are flying everywhere.  Jacobs grabs the mic and calls everyone tough guys for throwing shit.  He said the trash represents everything the fans are.  Who is he, Hulk Hogan?  “Age Of The Fall is unstoppable, unstoppable, unstoppable, unstoppable”.  Fans are STILL throwing things.  AOTF finally leave.  Crowd shows their appreciation for Steen and Generico as they leave ringside.

Overall this was not a very good show.  It was one of the weakest ROH shows I have seen.  It seemed kind of a throw away show besides the Main Event.  The main was good, but it wasn’t worth $20.  If you can grab this in a sale and have to watch all shows in a row, then buy it.  But don’t waste your money, get a better ROH DVD.
