ROH DVD REVIEW - BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY 6.27.08

Dayton, Ohio

6.27.08

Bryan Danielson starts off the show backstage and says that his driving force right now is the ROH World Title.  He says nobody works harder than him, and I agree.  He says that tonight Erick Stevens is in his way.  Stevens got the best of him in their last match but tonight Danielson will prove why he deserves a title shot.

Shane Hagadorn/Bobby Dempsey w/Sara Del Ray and Larry Sweeney vs. Silas Young/Mitch Franklin.   Before the match starts Larry Sweeney slaps Bobby Demspey than cuts a promo about Adam Pearce winning the ROH belt tonight and will be a double champion.  Sweeney then focuses on Bobby and says he isn’t in shape for a match tonight.  He then tells the returning Tank Toland to come out.  Toland then takes the mic and says Bobby hasn’t lost a pound since he has been gone and that he has taken Bobby out of the match and inserted himself as Hagadorn’s partner.  Toland then throws Dempsey out the ring and tells him to go to the back.  Match finally starts.  Toland picked up little Mitch Franklin with one hand in his chest and slammed him to the mat, and pinned him for the win.  Winners: Sweet N Sour Inc (Tank Toland and Shane Hagadorn).  A quick little opener, crowd wasn’t really into it.  OK match.  SNS were celebrating their win in the ring when Brent Albright ran in and chased them off.  He grabs a mic and says by the end of the night he will have his hands on Larry Sweeney.

Tyler Black w/Allison Wunderland vs. Delirious.  Black is my favorite guy in ROH right now so this should be a good one.  Nigel joins Lenny and Dave on commentary.  They are talking about Nigel’s big title for title match tonight, completely ignoring the match in the ring.  Delirious went up to the top and Allison grabbed his leg stopping him, then Daizee Haze came out to put Allison in check.  They made their way outside of the ring to the floor, and Black went for a kick and missed and hit one of the security guards and dumbass Delirious grabbed Black and gave him a suplex onto the guard that Black kicked, good stuff.  Allison hit Daizee with her purse and Rhett Titus comes out to check on her.  Delirious was distracted by what happened to The Haze and Black hit him with the Small Package Driver for the win.  Winner: Tyler Black.  This was a fun match.  I always like seeing Daizee and Tyler Black.  The Delirious/Daizee/Titus shit so far has been great.  Its one of the best things going in ROH right now.

Brent Albright vs. Claudio Castagnoli vs. Jay Briscoe.   Three heavy fan favorites here.  Nigel is still on commentary and he just called Claudio, “Castagonads”.  Claudio knocked Albright out of the ring and hit Jay with a Running European Uppercut for the win.  Winner: Claudio Castagnoli.  Nigel says that Claudio may have won but he is not ROH champion.  After the match, SNS Inc comes out and knocks Jay out of the ring and drags Albright back in.  Tank and Hagadorn go for a Double Clothesline but Albright runs through it and destroys them both.  Jay and Albright shake hands after SNS run off.  Another fun match, good three way.

Erick Stevens vs. Bryan Danielson.  Alot of the match has been Danielson working over Stevens’ left leg.  Stevens hit Danielson with a Lariat then the Doctor Bomb and pinned him for the win.  Winner: Erick Stevens.  Crowd was stunned at the finish.  Loud boos, with a spatter of cheers.  Awesome WRESTLING match.  It was slow and technical.  Thats 2 wins now that Stevens holds over Danielson.  While recovering from the grueling bout, the fans give both men a standing ovation.

They cut to Tank Toland in the back making Bobby Dempsey do squats while Delirious is walking around yelling “Daizee?  Daizee?”.

Necro Butcher vs. Austin Aries in a Relaxed Rules Match.  I am gonna go out on a limb and say this won’t be the wrestling classic that the previous match before this was.  Necro has the best punches in wrestling.  Aries puts Necro through a table then gets on the mic and says he doesn’t have a problem with Necro, he just does whatever Jimmy Jacobs says.  Necro says because Jacobs is his friend.  Aries says that Jacobs only cares about himself and nobody else.  Aries tells Necro that he is just a follower.  Aries says he is sick of beating people’s asses besides Jacobs.  His beef isn’t with Necro and he isn’t going to fight back against Necro because he doesn’t have a problem with him.  Aries says that Necro wasn’t in the car when they attacked Lacey.  He throws down the mic, stands there with his hands behind his back and Necro punches him.  He tells Necro that he has been brainwashed.  Necro punches him again, Aries won’t fight back.  Necro says he has something to say, grabs the mic, then punches Aries with it.   Aries gets the mic and says that he is a man of his word and he isn’t going to fight back.  He says he is trying to send Necro a message.  Necro grabs a chair.  Aries stands in Necro’s face with his hand behind his back, throws down the mic, and Necro hits him with a chair and pins him for the win.  Winner: Necro Butcher.  Obviously this was just to further and angle and wasn’t supposed to be an actual match.  Jacobs comes out and tells Necro that he did the right thing.  Jacobs tells Aries that he is in his head.

Stevens is getting interviewed in the back and says his first victory against Danielson wasn’t a fluke.  He says he sees big things coming.

Joey Matthews and Jimmy Jacobs vs. Kevin Steen and El Generico.  Jacobs had Steen in the End Time, when Generico broke it up with a Yakuza Kick to Jacobs head and Steen rolls up Jacobs for the win.  Winners: Kevin Steen and El Generico.  The win gets them closer to a Tag Title shot.  After the match Matthews lowblows Steen and gives him a DDT.  Another good match.  ROH rarely ever has a shitty match, really.  Even the meaningless matches are fun.

They are in the back and Delirious finally finds Daizee.  Titus interupts and says that he respects Daizee and thats why he saved her.  Daizee thanks Rhett for helping her.  Delirious say nothing and stands there bewildered.

Chris Hero vs. Roderick Strong.  A damn good match.  Finish saw Hero hit Strong with 2 Roaring Elbows then a Knockout Elbow and then cover him for the win.  Winner: Chris Hero.  This wasn’t as good as Danielson/Stevens but it was a good technical match.  After the match Sweeney says that the knockouts by Hero aren’t stopping.  He tells Hero he has girls and food out back waiting for Hero and to go to the bank.  Sweeney then introduces the NWA Champion, Adam Pearce.

Adam Pearce vs. Nigel McGuinness in a NWA Title for ROH Title match.  “Repo Man” chants at Pearce throughout the match.  At one point, there was a streamer stuck on Pearce’s boot and Nigel grabbed it and put it over his eyes, emulating the Repo Man.  Big pop for that.  Pearce had Nigel pinned and Sweeney grabbed Nigel’s leg so he couldn’t kick out, the ref saw it and made Sweeney leave ringside.  Pearce ran into Nigel and bumped him into the ropes, Nigel rebounded and hit Pearce with the Jawbreaker Lariat.  Nigel was announced as the new NWA Champion.  Sweeney comes back out and tells ROH President and NWA representative Dave Marquez and told them that Nigel threw Pearce over the top and should be DQ’d.  Winner: And Still NWA Champion, Adam Pearce.  Pearce takes the mic and says no man in ROH is going to take his belt.  Brent Albright comes out and single handedly takes out all the members of Sweet N Sour Inc, except Bobby Dempsey.  Chris Hero runs in and takes out Albright.  Pearce was going to Piledrive Albright on the NWA Title but Claudio and Jay Briscoe make the save.  Everyone makes their way to the back but Jay and The Age Of The Fall come out and attack Jay.  Steen and Generico come down and make the save.  Now Necro Butcher is out and takes out Steen and Generico.  Mark Briscoe returns and makes the save and takes out AOTF!  Jay hits a huge dive to the floor on everyone.  Black then hits a Moonsault to the floor on everyone.  Necro goes to the top rope and hits a Summersault to the floor.  Generico then hits a dive of his own.  The Briscoes are in the ring with Steen and Generico and they start pushing eachother, then the Briscoes leave.  Steen gets on the mic and says that before the end of this year, he will have a ROH title around his waist.  He says that he is sick of saying that over and over so he is going to make a change to that.  He says it doesn’t matter if its the AOTF, Nigel, The Briscoes, Kevin Steen will have a Title around his waist, but it won’t be before the end of the year, but the next time ROH comes to Dayton on November 21st, Kevin Steen will have a title belt.

Overall it was a solid show.  No real stand out matches, but Danielson/Stevens was my favorite match.  One thing I have noticed with these new ROH DVDs I’ve been watching lately is that there is ALOT of post match occurances.  I haven’t decided if thats a good or bad thing yet.  I would buy this DVD if I was you.  From top to bottom, this was a good show.  I have nothing bad to say about it.
