DVD REVIEW - ROH RETURN ENGAGEMENT - 4.19.08

Chicago Ridge, IL

We open the show with a promo backstage by the Motor City Machine Guns.  They are talking about how their rematch with the Briscoes is one year in the making, and the question is who is the best tag team in the world.  They mention that the first word that comes to their minds when they think of the Briscoes is “redneck”.  Shelley says they are made in Detriot, and tonight they are winners.

Now they cut to the Briscoes for a promo.  Jay says last year when they beat the Machine Guns they proved they were the best tag team in the world.  And they will do it again tonight when they defeat them for a second time.

First Match - Silas Young vs. Austin Aries.  Aries opening a ROH show can only mean good things.  He just brought the crowd to their feet with a dive onto Silas onto the floor.  Match is a little weird.  Not in a bad way.  Silas is basically on the low card and Aries is one of the top guys in ROH, and Silas is actually getting a nice amount of offense in.  This is a pretty damn good opener.  Crowd is super into Aries like always.  Silas tried the headstand in the corner to the arabian press, but Aries put the knees up.  All the while Young had a wedgie.  Aries has Silas in the Last Chancery and Young taps.  Winner: Austin Aries.

Even though, he lost, Silas came out of the match looking strong.  Aries plays to the crowd after the match.  Here comes Jimmy Jacobs.  Aries is still in the ring.  He has a mic and says he wants to welcome Aries to the Age Of the Fall.  Jacobs said he is proud that Aries and he can fight side by side.  Aries grabs the mic out of his hand.  Aries says he is proud, that Jacobs is proud, that he is standing next to him.  The night that Jacobs sent Lacey to Aries to convince him to, Aries says there was alot of talking but there was alot of non-verbal communication as well.  Aries told Lacey everything he could do for her.  Aries says they came to an agreement that Jacobs is nothing more than what Aries ate alot of that night, “pussy”.  Aries says never for one second has he thought about joining Jacobs cause.  Because they are fake.  They set a women to do a mans job.  Aries says Lacey now follows Aries, and tells Jacobs to stay out of Aries and Lacey’s business and this is the only warning he will get.  Jacobs is yelling without a mic saying theres no way Lacey left him she loves him.

Second Match: Alex “Sugarfoot” Payne vs. Mitch Franklin.  Crowd in Chicago loves Sugarfoot.  They throw some streamers for him.  Crowd is chanting Sugar-foot, Sugar-foot! Out comes Jimmy Jacobs, he said he left the ring too early.  He said Aries is a liar and he has nothing to be mad about.  He says that, the Age of the Fall is about action and he going to show Aries what kind of action they take.  Out comes Necro Butcher with a chair and a fist wrapped in barbed wire.  Hes going to kill them.  The bell just rang, has this turned into a three way dance?  Necro punches them both with the barbed wire.  Prazak says its a handicap match now.  Necro is digging the barbed wire into the head of Alex Payne.  Necro has some of the sickest punches ever.  Sugarfoot is busted open.  Necro punches them both in the face after destroying them for about 1 minute, and pins then both while shouting, “Morishima, Ill see you at the Hammerstein Ballroom”.  Crowd is into Necro.  Winner: Necro Butcher

Third Match:  Adam Pearce and Brent Albright w/Larry Sweeney vs. Claudio Castagnoli and Pelle Primeau.  Crowd chanting “Repo Man” at Adam Pearce.  Claudio and Pelle get a ton of streamers.  Pearce and Claudio start the match off, Pearce points at Pelle and says he “wants him!”.  Claudio obligizes and tags in Pelle.  Pearce and Albright and taking turns destroying Pelle.  Everytime Pelle shows signs of a comeback it only lasts about 3 seconds and then hes on the defensive end again.  Pelle is still not backing down after taking all of this punishment the entire match.  Pelle FINALLY evades Albright and makes the tag to Claudio!  European uppercuts for Sweet N Sour Inc, Claudio is clearing house.  Big Swing on Albright.  Albright has Claudio, Pearce is coming from behind with the briefcase he carried to the ring, goes to hit Claudio but hits Albright instead.  Claudio gives Pearce an uppercut, sends him outside the ring, grabs Albright and hits the Ricola Bomb for the win.  Winners: Pelle Primeau and Claudio Castagnoli.  Sweet N Sour Inc is in the ring trying to help Albright up, Albright doesn’t say anything and walks away from them.

We go to a promo in a weight room with Kevin Steen.  He is talking about his rematch with Nigel tonight for the ROH title.  Steen says he is taking the match tonight so seriously he is actually going to work out.  He gets on a treatmill and sets it to the lowest speed possible.  He then says it is going to fast and stops it.  He tells Nigel that he will see tonight, how far Steen is willing to go to become ROH champion.

Fourth Match: Ashley Lane vs. MsChif vs.  Daizee Haze vs. Lacey.  Everyone but Lacey shakes hands.  Ashley Lane is really, really fucking hot.  Not on a Daizee level but hey, not alot of ladies are.  MsChif tags in Daizee and Lane goes to tag in Lacey but Lacey drops off the apron because he is scared as shit of Daizee.  Lacey attacks Daizee from outside the ring, gets her dazed and then asks Ashley to tag her in since she already has her fucked up.  Daizee regains her composure and Lacey fakes a knee injury and rolls over to tag Ashley back in.  MsChif tags Lacey back in and what a surprise, her knee is fine.  She immediately runs over to the other corner and lays out Daizee who isn’t even legal.  Lacey kicks Ashley with her “hurt” leg to show that its fine.  MsChif takes out all 3 women on the floor with a dive from the top rope to the outside.  MsChif hits her variation of the DDT on Ashley and gets the win.  This so far, is the match of the show.  Non-stop action the whole time.  I think I need to check more of MsChif out, shes fucking awesome.  Winner: MsChif. 

Here comes Jimmy Jacobs, after the match.  He is trying to help Lacey and ask her if she is OK.  Jacobs brings up what Aries said earlier in the show and that he hasn’t seen Lacey in 3 weeks and he just wants her to tell him everything Aries said was a lie.  Lacey grabs the mic and says she really didn’t want to do this here.  She tells him they need to go their seperate ways.  She walks out of the ring to leave, Austin comes out and meets her before she gets backstage and kisses her in front of Jimmy.  Jacobs collapses in the ring and is crying.  The fans ruin it by throwing streamers in the ring.  Out comes the Age of the Fall to help Jacobs.  Jacobs tells them to leave him alone and don’t touch him.  He is really taking this hard.  This is the girl he has been chasing for years, he finally got her and now she left him for Aries.

Fifth Match: Chris Hero vs. Delirious.  Sweeney and Bobby Demsey’s fatass are out with Hero.  Dempsey isn’t wearing a shirt and his blubber is everywhere.  The bell rings and Delirious freaks out and does all of Hero’s usual showboating to mock him.  The announcers remark that that is the old Chris Hero and not the one we have been seeing recently, he is more focused.   Crowd is chanting “truffle shuffle” at Dempsey.  Thats a good one.  Slow paced match here.  Most of the time spent with Hero giving it to Delirious.  Delirious is starting to make a comeback, getting the crowd into it.  Headbutts and chops by Delirious.  He yells, “Daizee Haze” and hits Hero with a heart punch.  Delirious goes for the Panic Attack in the corner but Hero stands up hits Delirious with a Roaring Elbow and Chris Hero gets the win.  Winner: Chris Hero.  I love Hero’s music.  Lenny tells us we have a new, serious Chris Hero.  Just a basic match, trying to get Hero as being serious now, I guess.

Sixth Match: Motor City Machine Guns vs. The Briscoes.  Rematch 1 year in the making.  Crowd is going nuts for the Guns, lots of streamers.  “Welcome Back” chants.  Briscoes also get some streamers.  This match is non-title.  This is going to be fucking awesome.  Crowd is going nuts.  The teams shake hands.   Sabin and Mark start off the match.  At one point, Shelley was outside with the Briscoes and Sabin went to a dive to the outside but Ref Todd Sinclair stopped him.  Sinclair then tried to restore order on the outside and Sabin dove over him to the outside onto the Briscoes, almost kicking a girl in the front row and he landed standing up on 2 chairs in the front row.  Awesome.  Crowd goes nuts.  Sabin just went for a Dragon Suplex on Jay, Sinclair was counting and Mark grabbed Shelley and gave him an Exploder onto Sabin to break up the pin.  ROH chants.  Jay went for a Super Jay Driller on Shelley, Sabin came up from behind and gave him a Super German Suplex.  Now Mark has Shelley in the corner.  He is going for a Super Cutthroat Driver.  Shelley hits a Super Sliced Bread #2 and gets the 1, 2, 3 on Mark.  Winners: The Motor City Machine Guns.  Lenny says we need to see a tie breaker match  between the two teams as the fans chant, “Please Come Back”.  The Guns are embracing the Briscoes and they raise eachothers hands as both teams pose for the crowd.  “ROH, ROH ROH”.  This is what makes ROH great, you can have an AWESOME tag match like this in the middle of the card.  That just tells you how great wrestlers are in the locker room.

Shelley and Sabin leave but the Briscoes are still in the ring.  Here comes Age Of the Fall and they attack the Briscoes.  Mathews is holding up Mark and Jacobs goes to spike him but Mark gets his hand in the way and Jacobs stabs his wrist.  Mark is “hurt”, he immediately rolls out of the ring and screams in pain (Mark needed surgery for all the wear and tear on his wrist over the years and this was a way to write him out of the action).  It is also a way to get Jacobs over as being insane because Lacey left him.  Prazak is in the parking lot trying to figure out what is wrong with Mark and Jay says they have to go to the hospital they slit Mark’s wrist.

Seventh Match: Kota Ibushi vs. El Generico.  Lots of streamers for the Japanese Ibushi.  Tons of “ole” chants for Generico’s entrance.  Match starts off slow, with some mat work, which is surprising considering these 2 are awesome high flyers.  HUGE dropkick by Ibushi, he jumped so high he almost went right over Generico’s head.  Holy shit Generico was climbing to the top and Ibushi caught him with a handspring into a backflip and caught him with a kick.  That was the shit.  Generico fell to the outside and Ibushi jumped over the top rope off the mat and hit a Springboard Moonsault off the second rope to the outside and broke the barricade in the process.  HOLY FUCK.  Generico ran the ropes, went for a clothesline, Ibushi did his matrix bridge, dodged the clothesline, knipped up, hit Generico with a kick, then hit a German suplex for a 2 count.  “ROH, ROH, ROH”.  Generico has Ibushi on the top and he is going for the Brainbustaaaa and Ibushi counters, knocks him off the ropes into the middle of the ring.  Ibushi goes for a moonsault, Generico moves, Ibushi lands on his feet AND HITS A STANDING MOONSAULT ONTO GENERICO ALL IN ONE MOTION.  FUCK!  2 count!  Generico is looking for the top rop Brainbuster again, Ibushi counters and hits a reverse rana.  2 count again!  Ibushi up top, hits a Phoenix Splash for the 3 count.  Insane match.  Ibushi does shit I didn’t even think was possible.  You can to buy this DVD for this match only,  anything after this match is just a bonus.  This and the Briscoes match was easily worth the $20 or whatever I paid.  Winner: Kota Ibushi.

Sweet N Sour is backstage, without Albright.  Sweeney tells Pearce that his loss tonight was all Albright’s fault.  Albright shows up and wants to know what is in the briefcase.  Sweeney tells him not to worry about it and that they all need to go out and party.

Eighth Match: Vulture Squad vs. Age Of The Fall.   It is going to be Tyler Black/Joey Matthews/Zach Gowen representing AOTF.  Here comes the Vulture Squad consisting of Jack Evans/Ruckus/Jigsaw.  Matthews is trying to go after Jack before the match starts.  They both start off the match.  Evans has to dance before the match starts.  Evans doing some nice mat wrestling.  Joey is working over Jack’s arm.  Jack makes the tag to Ruckus.  Black comes in illegaly, Ruckus takes him out.  Standing Moonsault onto Matthews by Ruckus.  Age of the Fall goes out to the floor to try and regroup.  Matthews gets back in takes down Ruckus and tags in Black.  Black chops Ruckus.  Jigsaw is in the ring now, he and Ruckus are double teaming Black.  Now Evans is in, Jigsaw and Ruckus toss Evans into a moonsault onto Black.  Now Jigsaw is in the ring with Black, Black tags in Matthews.  Zach Gowen is taunting Evans and Ruckus while Black and Matthews works over Jigsaw in their corner.  Crowd is chanting Jigsaw, trying to get him going,  He rolls to his corner and tags in Evans.  Evans goes for a moonsault to the outside but AOTF grab his legs and pull him off and slam him to the floor.  They roll him back in the ring and Gowen gets tagged in.  He works Evans over and tags Black back in.  Black tags in Matthews.  Evans tries to tag someone in but Joey stops him.  Matthews slams Evans face first into the mat and covers him for a 2 count.  Evans gets whipped to the ropes, reverses it and hits a spring moonsault elbow, Evans finally makes the tag to Ruckus.  He is cleaning house.  Ruckus throws Matthews to the floor and Ruckus hits him with a dive on the outside.  Jigsaw’s turn to fly, he takes out 5 guys all at once.  Evans does a springboard 450 to evryone on the floor.  Jigsaw puts Black in the ring and follows him in, goes for a kick, Black counters, but Jigsaw counters the counter and takes Black down.  Gowen hits a springboard moonsault on Ruckus.  Powerbomb by Black into the corner on Evans, then hits him with the Small Package driver, cover, 1.2.3.  Winners: Age Of the Fall, with Black pinning Evans.  Here comes Jacobs.  He grabs the mic again.  He tells the AOTF to go to the back and that he has to do this one alone.  He said he carved his niche in this business as a tough son of a bitch.  Ask around he is a tough guy.  He says Aries didn’t hurt his body he crushed his heart and broke his soul and that he can’t forgive him.  He was a man and stole Lacey so now be a man and face him face to face.  Austin comes running out.  Jacobs is punching him.  They are exchanging blows.  Here comes AOTF back out and Aries does a dive to the outside onto them.  AOTF gets Aries and they are all working him over.  Jacobs is yelling, “you are the man huh?? you are the man???”.  Jacobs tells Joey and Black to hold Aries up.  Jacobs has the spike.  He is standing behind Aries and acting if he is going to cut Aries throat, Lacey comes out to try to stop him.  Jacobs grabs Lacey.  Black is telling Jacobs to spike her, but he can’t do it.  He dropped the spike and collapsed, now he is leaving the ring while crying.  Lacey and Aries are holding eachother in the ring.

Main Event: Kevin Steen vs. Nigel McGuiness (c.) for the ROH World Title.  Nigel does his usual way of getting in the ring where he is doing a backwards split underneath the bottom rope and then sticks his ass in the near while getting up and he told Steen he was going to have to look at his ass and while Nigel was doing it, Steen came from behind and kicked him right in the balls.  Steen grabs the belt and holds it in the air like he is going to win.  Nigel goes outside the ring and Steen is pounding him and chopping him outside of the ring.  Nigel with a European Uppercut, Steen strikes him back.  Steen acts like he is going for another chop but he pokes Nigel in the eye and Nigel rolls back in the ring.  Nigel goes for the Jawbreaker lariat but he kicks him out of the ropes to the floor.  Steen with a splash to the outside on Nigel.  Nigel is trying to get in the ring but Steen grabs him and whips him into the barricade.  Nigel is now on the offense.  He drives Steen into the barricade, shoulder first.  Both men are back in the ring.  Nigel is working over the injured arm of Steen.  Kicks him in the back, Steen gets back up and chops Nigel, Nigel punches his bad shoulder.  Nigel puts Steens arm behind his back and sweeps his leg so he falls on his own arm.   Nigel has Steen in an arm submission while the ref asks Steen if he wants to give up, he says no.  Steen reverses it.  He is trying to lock Nigel in the Sharpshooter.  Nigel gets to the ropes.  Exchanging chops in the corner.  Steen is now biting Nigel’s chest.  Ref breaks it up, Steen goes back and bites him more some.  Steen goes for a Cannonball in the corner but misses and Nigel covers for a 2 count.  Nigel went for the Tower of London but Steen reversed it, took Nigel down and hooked in the Sharpshooter.  Nigel gets to the ropes and the ref tells Steen to break the hold.  Steen is holding his injured shoulder.  Nigel locks in the London Dungeon and Steen gets to the ropes.  More chops in the corner by Nigel.  Headstand in the corner by Nigel, Steen catches him and powerslams him then hits him with a Senton then hits a cannonball in the corner on Nigel.  Nigel sets Steen nuts first on the ropes, goes to the top and clothesline Steen off of the ropes into the ring, covers him for a nearfall.  Running European Uppercut in the corner by Nigel into a lariat, cover for another nearfall.  Nigel hooks in the London Dungeon again, Steen reverses it into the Sharpshooter.  Nigel again gets to the ropes and the hold is broken.  Pumphandle Neckbreaker by Steen, he then goes to the top rope and hits a Swanton Splash, then goes to the opposite corner and hits a frogsplash, cover, 1, 2, kickout by Nigel.  They are exchanging forearms, neither man is backing down.  Nigel has Steen in a sleeper, jawbreaker by Steen, Nigel goes for a jawbreaker lariat but Steen stops him with a Superkick for a nearfall.  Package Piledriver by Steen, goes for the cover, Nigel gets his foot on the rope.  Steen has Nigel on the apron by the time keeper table.  Nigel clotheslines Steen and Steen falls off the apron and goes through the table.  Nigel is show boating to the crowd and they boo loudly.  Nigel rolls Steen back into the ring.  Lariat by Nigel for a 2 count.  Nigel says this is for all you wankers and goes for a Package Piledriver but Steen counters it into a pin, but Nigel kicks out.  Steen gives Nigel a forearm, he does his rebound off the ropes and hits Steen with the Jawbreaker Lariat, covers him, holds the tights and gets 1, 2, 3.  Winner: Still ROH World Champion, Nigel McGuiness via Jawbreaker Lariat.

Delirious is in the back cutting a promo.  He sits down, the cameraman asks him if he is ok, Daizee comes out of nowhere and asks Delirious if he is ok and she stops to rub his back.  Delirious gets real excited and stands up and starts talking all crazy.  Daizee says OK, she will see him later and walks away.

Overall this show was the shit.  Generico/Ibushi, MCMG/Briscoes, the Shimmer 4 way, the main event, the 6 man tag were all either good or really good.  It is definitely worth picking up.  Right now they have all DVDs onsale for 10% off.  Might want to check this dvd out at www.rohwrestling.com.
